Skyscanner was formed in 2003 by Barry Smith, Bonamy Grimes and Gareth Williams. This prominent travel company is based in Edinburgh with other UK offices in Glasgow and London. There are also some bases planted overseas. Scotland’s leading tech firm is valued over £1 billion with their search facility being used by more than 50 million users each month. They focus on car hire, flights and hotels. Across this range, they have been making most of their strides through flights that is evident from their #1 ranking position in Google for the major term. If you check out their Facebook page you will see that they have impressively attracted more than 7 million fans.
Kayak was founded back in 2004 by Paul English and Steve Hafner. Other owned brands are Checkfelix and Swoodoo. This American company was acquired by The Priceline Group in 2013. This brought them into the same family as a number of established brands, the most well known being Booking.com. This service pulls data from 100s of travel sites to bring you the best prices on car hire, flights and hotels. Coverage extends to more than 30 countries and each year they claim to process over 1 billion queries. Their free mobile app has been downloaded over 40 million times. Brand awareness in the UK has improved drastically since they began running nationwide TV ad campaigns.
HotelsCombined (as branded) was formed in Sydney back in the year 2005. The 3 founders were Brendon McQueen, Michael Doubinski and Yury Shar. They managed to craft a leading hotel comparison site that aggregates more than 2 million deals from 100s of companies. Key partners include Booking.com, Expedia and LastMinute.com. Their objective is to curate all of the very best prices from across the web. This is clearly working out well, with more than 17 million users visiting their website each month. Coverage extends across 220 countries. As a metasearch engine, the listings are fetched as they appear directly. This means that they show external ratings and reviews as opposed to displaying their own.
Looking for Totally Beachin’ Holidays? This is what you can expect to find at this prominent online travel agency that was formed by Simon Cooper back in 2004. This brand has progressed well as the years have passed, but it was really in late 2013 when they hit the mainstream after launching their first national TV ad campaign. Across the 2016 year they plan to send 1 million happy travellers overseas for fun in the sun. This is a particular business of interest here since they are based in the same town of Stockport. At one point I even worked in the same building as their HQ that is found in Cheadle.
