Market Share Data: ⚡ Top 40 Banks | Top 100 Loans

Market Share: Online Loans

About:

ZopaOnline banking was studied in the initial comparison where we got a taster of where the British public was flocking for current accounts, overdrafts, personal loans and various other financial products. For this submission we have switched across to cover online loans outside of banking. Good and bad credit loan providers have been fused together that has enabled us to compose a top 100 loan list. As always, we have looked to Alexa.com to uncover the current UK traffic stats. Unlike banks that often shift logins to external sites, just 3 of the 100 did this here. All of the data was collected on the 27th March 2017. Regular updates will follow.

What Can We Learn from This Data?:

A higher rank suggests more market share, but the lender could have an open chequebook with advertising. It is tricky to differentiate since the logins are in most cases built within the same sites that they are promoting. Within the online banking list we added details of any switching rewards that were available (there was just 5). For this submission we wanted to do something extra as well and so the idea was to break down the complete list by niche. Further we’ll look at how the sectors compare. The objective is to uncover how much of a demand there is for any such loan type and who are the dominant players meeting that demand.

Market Share by Sector:

The top 100 online loans will be listed first and then we’ll look at the various best performing 10. When compiling this data, only the top 67 companies actually had a local Alexa ranking. As a result of this, every other firm had to be sorted by their global ranks. In the logbook space a rank went as high as 24 million. Other sites had no global ranking at all (often a sign that they are on their last legs). If you are seeking funding then we’d advise only using those placed within the top 5 of their category. Over time we should have profiled most of these and can then look at the plus points of each.

Notes:
– Admiral was scrubbed since well over 90% of their visits relate to insurance. Very few of their users are heading for their personal loan that is a new additional product from the insurer. Creation made their name with credit cards, but there is more of a balance here and so we included them. Both Besavvi and Hitachi use www.hpf.co.uk for logins. Hitachi’s main site has great traffic, but Besavvi doesn’t have a local rank and their global rank is around 3.4 million. Due to this, they weren’t ranked based on the portal used.
– For branding, we have often shortened the names when “Credit” or “Loans” is used at the end. We did this as there was overkill on these keywords that the search engines don’t like.
– Logins are not always provided that is especially the case in the doorstep and logbook sectors. If there is no login then we’ll mark (NL) by the listing.
– Not included below: Credit union, homeowner and bank funded loans. Most of the featured contracts are unsecured. The exception is logbook where the loan is secured against your vehicle. Lenders in that niche accept poor credit though and so they are easy to qualify for (very expensive though). A few companies may have been missed out below. We’ll add any that we learn about over time.

Summary:

Zopa was the top dog followed by RateSetter that shows that peer-to-peer lending is leading the charge (outside of banking). Zopa’s best rate at this time came in at 3.2% APR whilst RateSetter’s was 3.9%. The leading banks still come out on top for the lowest rates though. TSB drops to 2.8% and Sainsbury’s match this (Nectar only). You do need to borrow £7500 with each. In the subprime world it is Wonga that remains king, although they face increasing competition from SafetyNet and Sunny. Over the coming months we’ll be profiling the big hitters across each category that will help us to identify where the best features and value can be found.
